Differentiation for financial return

HP Inkjet

Andy has 12 year history of providing technology differentiating HP’s printer products. In 2012, this was a $24B business with $3.6B earnings. His patent portfolio’s $377M overall profit contribution to this company is a significant amount of the company’s earnings over time.

Memory Devices

Andy led origination of on-die memory IC architectures for resistive memory technology years ahead of the memory industry. HP did not pursue this technology area any further, since there were industry wide developments that needed to take place to enable it. Since then, industry players such as Micron and Intel have done the development required to enable this class of memory. This technology and its patents have been licensed and sold by HP to memory device makers such as Hynix. Licensing deals such as this one directly provide capital to boost profit or fund new ventures.
